South Sound Driveway Guide
How Much Gravel Do I Need for a Driveway?
If you’re planning a driveway project, one of the most common questions is: how much gravel do I actually need?
Ordering too little can delay your project, and ordering too much can cost more than necessary.
This guide breaks it down with practical tips for Lacey, Olympia, Tumwater, and Tenino.
3–6 inches (most driveways)
Road base / ¾” minus
Round up for compaction
1) Measure Your Driveway
Start with three measurements:
- Length (in feet)
- Width (in feet)
- Desired depth (in inches)
2) Convert to Cubic Yards
Gravel is commonly sold by the cubic yard (or by the ton). Use the formula below to estimate what you need.
Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Depth (ft) ÷ 27 = Cubic Yards
50 × 12 × 0.33 ÷ 27 ≈ 7.3 cubic yards
3) Choose the Right Gravel
Not all gravel performs the same. For driveways, crushed materials typically hold up best.
Best overall stability and compaction.
Compacts tightly; great under vehicle traffic.
Useful for drainage layers; can shift if used alone.
rounded decorative gravel for driveways— it tends to move under traffic and requires more maintenance.
4) Prep Your Site for Delivery
Good prep makes your driveway last longer and helps the material perform properly.
- Remove grass, roots, and soft soil
- Consider landscape fabric to reduce weeds
- Grade for drainage (standing water causes problems)
- Confirm access for a dump truck (width/clearance)
5) Schedule Gravel Delivery
Delivery saves time, labor, and vehicle wear compared to hauling gravel yourself. Gravel Today delivers throughout
